We support the licence renewal for The Weather Network/MétéoMédia

Our business creates open source software to run radio and TV playout systems, in use across Canada in all broadcast sectors. A core service we provide is in Emergency Alerting, especially in smaller remote communities and in third party languages. At present, we are the only Canadian company manufacturing Emergency alerting systems for broadcast that works with the Pelmorex system. We have provided our intellectual property and source code into the public domain for stations to use free of charges as well as providing turnkey supported systems.

Back in 2012 the Yukon Government’s Emergency Measures Organization did a pilot project up in the Yukon with CFET Radio, the first commercial FM station in Tagish to evaluate the Pelmorex emergency alerting systems. At that time, we were the 3rd installation in Canada and the first north of 60 to use this CAP based system using KU band satellite.

Since then, we went on to replicate the proprietary US based CAP alerting systems into open source software with the support of the Yukon Research Centre and with direct encouragement from Pelmorex. Pelmorex did not give us any unfair advantage or any special inside information. They did host our company and representatives several times at the Oakville offices and provided us with documentation to help guide our development.

We both understand the importance of unified communications and were able to work together towards furthering the objectives of Canadian alerting, especially in northern communities. We were able to create our solution just by looking at the CLFG documents that they issue, the technical blue prints, which shows that the model would allow anyone to participate. The CLFG documentation was so concise and complete that we were able to create our Emergency Alerting Player without having to ask Pelmorex a single question.

Pelmorex later assisted our company, by providing a dedicated weather feed of icons and forecasts for us to use as a demonstration of automatic visual weather information with emergency alerts as an overlay.

We wish The Weather Network/MétéoMédia all the best and look forward to collaborating on future innovative projects that benefit Canada.
